Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, announced a series of measures to level the playing field for Canadian workers and make Canada’s electric vehicle (EV) industry and steel and aluminum producers competitive in domestic, North American, and global markets.
The Ministry of Finance of Canada announced on August 26, effective October 1, 2024, A 100% surcharge tax is levied on all Chinese-made electric vehicles. These include electric and partially hybrid passenger cars, trucks, buses and vans. The 100% surcharge will be levied on the 6.1% tariff currently imposed on Chinese electric vehicles.
