The Ghana Bauxite Company plans to produce 6 million tons of bauxite by the end of 2025.
The Ghana Bauxite Company is striding towards an important goal in the bauxite production field – it plans to produce 6 million tons of bauxite by the end of 2025. To achieve this goal, the company has invested $122.97 million in upgrading infrastructure and enhancing operational efficiency. This measure not only demonstrates its determination for production growth but also heralds a new development upsurge in Ghana’s bauxite industry.
Since being acquired by Ofori-Poku Company Limited from Bosai Group in 2022, the Ghana Bauxite Company has embarked on a path of significant transformation. By 2024, the company’s production had increased significantly from 1.3 million tons per year to approximately 1.8 million tons. In terms of infrastructure upgrading, the company has purchased a series of large-scale equipment, including 42 new earth-moving machines, 52 dump trucks, 16 multi-purpose vehicles, 1 open-pit mining machine, 35 light vehicles, and 161 nine-axle trucks for transportation. The second open-pit mining machine is expected to be delivered by the end of June 2025. The investment and use of these equipment have greatly improved the company’s production capacity and transportation efficiency.
With the increase in bauxite production, the Ghana Bauxite Company is also focusing on the development of the downstream industries of bauxite. The company has announced a plan to build a bauxite refinery in the country, and this plan has multiple important significances. From the perspective of industrial development, the establishment of the bauxite refinery will extend the industrial chain of Ghana’s bauxite industry and increase the added value of bauxite products. The refined bauxite can be further processed into various aluminum materials such as aluminum plates, aluminum bars, and aluminum tubes, which are widely used in many industries such as construction, transportation, and electronics.
As for aluminum plates, they are commonly used materials in the construction industry and can be applied to the decoration of building exterior walls, indoor ceiling suspended ceilings, etc. Their good corrosion resistance and aesthetic appearance can meet the diverse requirements of architectural designs. Aluminum bars play a crucial role in the field of machining. Many mechanical parts, such as engine cylinder blocks and various transmission components, can be manufactured through machining of aluminum bars. Aluminum tubes are widely used in industries such as aerospace and automobile manufacturing. For example, the air conditioning systems of automobiles and the fuel delivery pipelines of aero engines all require the use of aluminum tubes because aluminum tubes have the advantages of light weight, relatively high strength, and good corrosion resistance, and can meet the high-performance requirements of these industries for materials. The establishment of the bauxite refinery can not only meet part of the domestic demand for these aluminum materials and machined products but also earn foreign exchange through exports, promoting the economic development of Ghana.
In terms of employment, the construction and operation of the bauxite refinery will create more job opportunities in the mining area. From the construction stage of the refinery, a large number of construction workers, engineers, etc. are needed. In the operation stage after completion, numerous technical workers and managers are required to ensure its normal operation. This will effectively alleviate the local employment pressure, increase the income level of residents, and promote the stability and development of the local society.
In the process of moving towards the goal of producing 6 million tons of bauxite by the end of 2025, the Ghana Bauxite Company, relying on infrastructure upgrades and downstream industry planning, is gradually building a more complete and competitive industrial system in the bauxite industry. Its future development prospects are promising, and it will also inject strong impetus into the economic growth of Ghana.
